Indian handset maker Micromax has announced that it has sold over a million units of its Canvas range of smart phones.

The company says that sales have been equally dominated by the leading metros and smaller towns in the country.

Talking about the milestone, Shubhodip Pal, CMO, Micromax, said, "The Canvas series has proved to be a trendsetter in Indian smartphone segment. The demand for these devices has been on an upward curve from the time of their launch. These are our flagship models and the overwhelming consumer response has made us confident that we are headed towards the right direction."

"When we launched the Canvas HD, for the first time our online sales partners had witnessed a digital queue in cyberspace to such an extent for any product, to the traditional cue one normally sees. It was great to witness consumers wait until 12:00am for their chance to book the Canvas HD on Valentine's Day selling 9000 units in less than 24 hours, " he added.

Micromax has positioned the Canvas series against other handset brands as a value for money yet feature rich line-up of smartphones. It had launched the first phone in the Canvas series, the A100, in August 2010.

The company has recently been riding high on the success of the Micromax Canvas 2 (Review | Pictures) and Micromax Canvas HD (Review | Pictures). Though the Micromax Canvas HD made a lot of buzz when it was announced, the phone's availability in the market has been constrained due to supply issues and the recent changes in custom duty structure, that resulted in a price hike. However, the phone has finally started shipping and is being seen at retail stores across the country. The company is also expected to launch the next handset in the Canvas series, Micromax A115 Canvas 3D smartphone, in the first week of May.

Micromax has also in the news recently as it was sued by global telecom giant Ericsson for Rs. 100 crore over patent infringement. The company is reportedly in talks with Ericsson over the issue and hopes to negotiate a FRAND license for the patents at the earliest.
