Samsung Galaxy S4 ruggedised version in the works: Report

While Samsung is busy launching its flagship device Galaxy S4 in various markets around the world, there are news reports floating that the company might be working on a ruggedised version of this smartphone.

UnwiredView via Techview.me is reporting that Samsung is working on a water-proof and dust-proof variant of Galaxy S4. This information was shared by none other than Young Soo Kim, who is the President of Samsung Mobility's Gulf division. Kim was addressing media queries at the Galaxy S4 launch. When quizzed regarding why Samsung is not offering any ruggedised smartphone as yet, he shared that the company is already working on the same.

However, Kim did not mention as to when this smartphone will be available in the market and what could be a tentative cost of this smartphone. As of now, Sony is offering a ruggedised smartphone in the form of Sony Xperia Z. The Sony Xperia Z is IP55 and IP57 certified, which makes this smartphone water and dust resistant.

Sony Xperia Z (Review | Pictures) was first announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 and is available in India for Rs. 38,990. Huawei is also expected to make its water proof smartphone Ascend D2 available across markets shortly.

Though the launch water-proof and dust-proof version of Samsung Galaxy S4 might be a little far away, the launch of Galaxy S4 in India is not. The company is expected to introduce the smartphone on April 26.

As you may be aware, the Samsung Galaxy S4 sports a 5-inch full-HD screen with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions, and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others. India is expected to get the octa-core version when the phone is unveiled this Friday.

The smartphone has 2GB of RAM is expected to come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants. It also features a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front. Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to be price at Rs. 43,490.
