Sony's flagship phone for 2013, the Sony Xperia Z is now receiving the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update, as reported by users in some European countries, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

While the users have confirmed getting the update on Sony's support forums, Sony focused blog Xperia Blog also informs that Sony has started rolling out the Android update to Xperia Z model numbers C6603 and C6602 carrying 10.3.A.0.423 as the firmware build version number.

The update, which can be downloaded through the Sony PC Companion desktop software and over the air via Sony's Updates app, brings some of the goodness of Android 4.2 including lock screen notifications in addition to minor UI changes. The update might not be immediately available for all users, so if you don't see it yet, you could check again later as at times these rollouts take a couple of weeks to reach all regions and all models.

It's worth mentioning that the Xperia ZL, which is a variant of the Xperia Z received the update a few weeks back. The Xperia ZL offers similar features and hardware specifications but is not water and dust resistant unlike the Xperia Z.

The Sony Xperia Z launched in March with Android 4.1. Though the Android 4.2 update doesn't offer much except lock screen notifications, a daydream picture frame like screensaver when the phone is inactive (might not be included with custom builds) and support for wireless display mirroring with additional hardware (via Miracast), we'd still expect flagship phones to run nothing but the latest software. It's worth pointing out that Samsung launched its Galaxy S4 smartphone with Android 4.2.
