The popular social networking site Twitter has been experiencing service outages in various countries. Users were unable to access the Twitter website or use the service via third-party apps. The problem seems to be ongoing nature, with services getting restored and going down again.

While the complete extent of the outage could not be determined, users across the world reported the outage. Twitter confirmed the outage by posting the following message on the site status.twitter.com - "Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue."

While Twitter outages have been pretty common in Twitter's formative years, the service has been rather stable off-late. The latest outage is extreme since even during its initial days, users would be greeted by the infamous "fail whale". Instances when the website has been completely inaccessible have been pretty rare.

Twitter was back up for a while, with Twitter updating their post to say "Update: this issue has been resolved." However, it seems the problem is still persisting. Twitter website now says, "Update: The issue is on-going and engineers are working to resolve it."

Update: At 00:50 IST on Friday, Twitter posted the following message: "Today's outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components. We'll provide updated information soon."
