At a much hyped event held at Milk Studios in Hollywood, Microsoft unveiled its new line of Surface tablets. While one will feature Windows 8 Pro, the other will run on Windows RT with ARM-based processor.

The new family of computing devices, as Microsoft calls it, is directly competing against Apple's iPad and other lightweight hybrids. Both devices include ultra-thin covers that double up as a keyboard and will be available in a range of colours as well.

Speaking of hardware, the Windows RT version of the tablet is thinner and lighter than its Windows 8 Pro sibling. The former measures just 9.3mm in thickness, comes with a 0.7mm kickstand to hold it upright and a 3mm touch keyboard that attaches magnetically like the iPad's Smart Cover.

The thicker companion running on Windows 8 is 13.5mm thick and a little under 2 pounds. It is expected to be priced similar to other ultrabook offerings currently available. The Pro version also comes with a stylus that snaps on magnetically to the side of the tablet and allows users to jot down notes.

The Surface sports a 10.6-inch screen and comes in an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is well suited for widescreen viewing.
