It was billed as an uproarious comedy that would take New York by storm, but a musical inspired by the rivalry between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs is on ice.

Ironically for a show featuring the richest man on the planet, 'Nerds' has been postponed due to a lack of funds. Instead it will take steps to tour nationally after already being performed in North Carolina and Philadelphia.

"It is with great disappointment that we will be postponing the Broadway opening of 'nerds' due to the loss of a major investor," producer Carl Levin said.

"We are grateful to the one-of-a-kind creative team and cast of this incredibly funny and heartwarming musical that audiences have so enthusiastically adored thus far and we look forward to nerds taking the country by storm," he added.

The show, which advertised itself as a "musical dot comedy" plots the lives of the computer whiz kids who revolutionized the world. It was composed by Hal Goldberg, with book and lyrics by Jordan Allen-Dutton and Erik Weiner.

The show made its debut at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, an annual birthing ground for new work in America's entertainment capital.
