Nizharkudai is a Tamil language drama that navigates the emotional perspective of career, care, and responsibilities. It has been written and directed by Shiva Armugam, marking his debut. Nizaharkudai means 'Shadow Umbrella,' which is also depicted in the film as the unseen bond of protection between mother and child. The story revolves around love, loss and emotions. It involves the conflicts that arise when ambitions coincide with the responsibilities of parenthood and caregiving. It offers a heartfelt narrative with the bonds made across generations, together with the sacrifices made for love and progress.
The movie was released on May 9, 2025, in theatres and is now available on the OTT Aha Tamil from May 30, 2025. This digital release will give the audience a wider experience to see the flow of emotions from their home screens.
The story shows Niranjan and Lancy, who are a young couple and work hard to secure their future in the USA. They leave their daughter Nila in the care of the Jothi, who is a Tamil refugee and has endured and survived the trauma of the Sri Lankan war. Further, the time passes, and Jothi makes a strong bond with her. This creates a conflict over whether the parents should choose their career or the well-being of their child. This is a genre of emotions with the motherhood and the price at stake for chasing their dreams.
The cast involves Devyani as Jothi, Vijjith as Niranjan and Kanmani Manoharan as Lancy and other supporting roles which involve Ilavarsu, Raj Kapoor, Neelima Rani and Vadivukkarasi. Jothisivia has produced the film under Dharshan Films. RB Gurudev is the cinematographer with Rolex as editor, and Naren Balakumar has given the music.
The movie received a mixed response from the critics and viewers. It was praised for its worthy storytelling and relevant themes, while some felt that the execution could be more captivating. The viewers felt it was relatable with the emotional portrayal of caregiving and conflict within the dreams and responsibilities.
