Nintendo's 3DS portable game player is expected to be available as planned on March 27, despite the destruction caused by Japan's massive earthquake.

"Business operations, including future product shipments, have not been significantly affected so far," Nintendo, based in Japan, said in a statement. A spokeswoman declined further comment.

The earthquake and resulting partial nuclear meltdown have caused havoc in Japan's technology industry. Factories are shut down, if not because of damage, then because of rolling blackouts or fuel shortages that make transportation difficult.

If the problems persist, production of some technology products, particularly those that rely on semiconductors that are made in Japan, may be affected. Nintendo would not say where 3DS is manufactured or where its components come from.

Plans for the video-game player, which lets users play games on a small screen in 3-D, and without 3-D glasses, were first unveiled in September. It is intended for people who like to play games away from home. Nintendo's suggested retail price is $250.
