While Microsoft is all set to unveil its next-generation Xbox at its Redmond campus on Tuesday, rival Sony wants to remind everyone about its own next generation console, the PlayStation 4, which will be announced on June 10.

Sony has released a teaser video that shows quick flashes of the PlayStation 4 hardware from different angles. The teaser doesn't reveal much except a few design details that appear to be of the console, its controllers and vents among others, all black in colour.

The company will announce the PlayStation 4 on June 10, the night before E3 officially gets underway at Las Vegas, but the console will go on sale during the holiday season. There was a rumour indicating a price point of 399 Euros, but there's nothing official about it yet.

Microsoft will also do its own event at the E3 where it will show off next generation Xbox games. Interestingly, the timing of Microsoft's event coincides with Apple's WWDC keynote presentation. So it's hosting a separate event to showcase the Xbox hardware and its features.

Sony had talked about the upcoming console for the first time in February at an event where it showed what the PlayStation 4 could do, without actually revealing the device itself during a two-hour announcement. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStation hardware itself was hidden backstage.

Sony did reveal that the insides of the PS4 will essentially be a "supercharged PC," much like an Xbox. Sony is using processing chips made by Advanced Micro Devices. The new console won't be able to play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, even though the PS4 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, just like the PS3. Instead, Sony said gamers will have to stream older games to the PS4 through the Internet. Other new features revolve around social networking and remote access.

The bulk of the event was devoted to demos of games for the PS4, including a realistic team racing simulator, "Drive Club," super-powered action sequel "Infamous: Second Son," artsy puzzler "The Witness" and several first-person shooter games, including "Killzone: Shadow Fall." Beyond games, the PS4 will let people create animation in 3D using a Move motion controller - all in real time.
