  • Apple releases public beta of iOS 10.1
  • The update brings Depth Affect to camera app on iPhone 7 Plus
  • Portrait Mode is still in beta stage

After releasing the first iOS 10.1 developer beta earlier this week, Apple has now the released the first public beta of iOS 10.1. The most interesting change which this update brings, is the beta version of 'Portrait Mode' to the Camera app on iPhone 7 Plus.

Portrait Mode allows users to click pictures with bokeh or depth of field effects and is a feature exclusive to iPhone 7 Plus due presence of a dual camera module on the device, and will not be available on other iOS devices including the iPhone 7. Apple showcased the mode at stage during its iPhone event earlier this month. This mode essentially blurs the out-of-focus background while keeping the subject in focus.

Even though the feature couldn't make it to iPhone 7 Plus at its launch, it has finally made its way, even if in beta stage, to the device.

It should be noted that Apple has provided instructions so that users can get the best pictures out of this mode. The camera mode asks you to 'Place the subject within 8 feet' for the Depth Effect to work properly. Further, the function is able to work better in conditions where adequate amount of light is available.

As the feature is still in beta stage, there can be certain bugs or performance issues associated with it. As of now, there is no option to record videos in 'Portrait Mode', as reported by GSM Arena.
