  • LG might ditch the ‘G’ series branding for its flagship smartphones
  • The branding might be alternated to a two digit number instead
  • The next flagship by LG is expected at MWC 2018

LG Electronics reportedly has plans to repackage its flagship G series of smartphones with a new naming scheme, which means that there will no longer be an LG G7 this year. The name might be replaced with a two digit number, among other options that the company is yet to announce.

The South Korean technology giant is looking to revamp its flagship series with a new rebranding plan. According to a report by The Investor, "LG is preparing a new brand strategy for the G series in the first half of the year. Numbering the phone with a two-digit number and rebranding the phone with a new name are some of the options on the table." An LG official was quoted as saying this to Digital Daily, a South Korean technology news publication.

Starting off with the Optimus G, LG Electronics has used the 'G' branding for its flagship smartphones since 2012 ('Optimus' was removed in 2013 with the LG G2). However, the 2018 flagship for company will not be called the LG G7. The report suggests that this decision is an industry standard with Apple and Samsung having indulged similarly in the past. There is currently no confirmation on what the revised naming scheme would be.

If the two digit theory is indeed true, the LG G7 could end be being called the LG G70, or even the LG 70 considering the 'G' brand might be ready for an exit. Last year, Apple introduced a new premium iPhone, termed the iPhone X, that has a naming scheme not in line with the company's current flagships - iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

LG is expected to unveil its latest flagship smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. Earlier reports have suggested that LG's upcoming flagship will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. For this, it will be launched after the Samsung Galaxy S9 is unveiled.
