  • Customers need to mail their affected devices to fix the problem

More than a couple of months after it was reported online, OnePlus is now eventually addressing an odd issue that was preventing HD streaming of content on OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The issue, which was mainly affecting HD streaming of content through platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and Netflix, can be resolved by mailing the affected OnePlus handset back to the company. It is worth pointing out that the company is bearing the courier cost but only for customers in its service regions, including North America, Europe, India, and China.

A OnePlus community manager, David Y, in a statement to its official forums confirmed the fix and revealed the workaround. "Due to security processes involved with updating the devices, we can only deliver the update via a physical connection from an authenticated PC. If you are interested in this update, please contact our CS (customer service) team for more information. We're covering the courier costs for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T customers who would like the update, as you will need to send your device to us to update," the statement reads.

OnePlus is assuring that the affected devices will be updated and returned back to customers "in no more than five working days" from the time they were received by the customer service team. However, the company isn't extending the update process for customers who're outside its service regions. Thankfully, if you're in one of the service regions, then you can opt for the update without spending any courier cost. Having said that, it is important to note that there aren't any concrete details whether the update process will wipe the personal content stored on the devices.

Back in December, users reported on the OnePlus forums that the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T weren't able to stream HD content from renowned services such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. The cause that was resulting in the limitation was found to be the lack of Google's Level 1 Widevine DRM that most of the popular services use to protect copyrights. Since the OnePlus models included Level 3 Widevine DRM, they are so far able to only stream SD content.
