  • Google is offering them unlimited images and videos storage in full-res
  • Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL customers will get this feature for three years

Google has committed to stand by its promise of offering Pixel and Pixel XL customers unlimited storage for photos and videos in original resolution for life, even as its new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL don't offer this generous feature, the company said.

Speaking to Android Police, Google said Pixel and Pixel XL customers don't need to worry about what happens to their photos and videos after a few years as the company will support this feature for them for life. Both the phones, which were originally unveiled last year, gave customers lifetime access for storing unlimited photos in Google Photos in their original resolution and file size.

The confusion began when Google said earlier this month that the new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL also have access to unlimited storage of videos and photos in Google Photos app, but come the end of 2020, though the company will continue to offer unlimited storage it will begin to compress the image and videos from their native resolutions to "high-quality".

"Free, unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel through the end of 2020, and free, unlimited high-quality storage for photos taken with Pixel afterwards," the company had noted. Google defines high-quality as images in resolution of up to 16-megapixel, and videos in full-HD (1080p).

Original Pixel and Pixel XL customers will certainly appreciate Google sticking to its promise. In comparison, iPhone users are not entitled to any such iCloud offering from Apple. To make things interesting, Google offers unlimited "high-quality" photo and videos storage in Photos to iPhone and iPad users as well.
