Samsung Galaxy S5 Starts Receiving Knox 2.0 Security Suite Update

Samsung has announced global availability of its Knox 2.0 security suite for the company's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5 (Review | Pictures).

The South Korean giant has declared that Knox 2.0 will be rolled out to other Samsung Galaxy devices through OS upgrades in the coming months.

The company notes that the Knox 2.0 was initially announced at MWC and includes features such as Knox Workspace, EMM, Marketplace and Customization.

The Knox Workspace includes a series of core security enhancements for devices from erratic kernels to third-party apps. Some of the features in Knox Workspace: TrustZone-protected certificate management, Knox key store, real-time protection for system integrity, two-factor biometric authentication and the generic framework of Knox. The Knox Workspace currently comes preloaded on the Galaxy S5 and which can be activated by IT managers of the company for use, according to Samsung.

The company claims that Knox 1.0 workspace users will be automatically migrated to the newer version with an OS upgrade.

Some of the other new features of the Knox 2.0 platform include an enhanced user experience with support for all Android apps from Google Play; Split-Billing feature works with carriers and calculates separately the bills for personal-used apps and professional-used apps, Universal MDM Client (UMC) and Samsung Enterprise Gateway (SEG).

With Knox 2.0, Samsung has added two new clouds based services - Knox EMM and Knox Marketplace, alongside a customisation service inventively called Knox Customization.

Announcing the global availability of Knox 2.0, JK Shin, President and CEO, Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics said, "Knox has been widely deployed by enterprises since it became first commercially available in the market in September 2013. As a result of this rapid adoption, we needed to evolve the Samsung Knox platform to directly address the ever-changing needs of the enterprise as we demonstrate our commitment to protect and respond to future enterprise mobility and security challenges."
