ZTE unveils Firefox OS-based ZTE Open

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 is in full swing and we are seeing plenty of new launches. ZTE got its share of limelight as it launched the first smartphone based on Firefox OS - ZTE Open.

ZTE Open features a 3.5-inch screen with HVGA display. The smartphones is powered by a Cortex A5 processor, which clocks 1GHz. There is 256MB of RAM, 512MB of internal storage. For camera there is a 3.2-megapixel rear camera on-board. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, A-GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities.

ZTE Open packs in 1,200mAh battery. This smartphone is an entry level device and is expected to be light on the pocket. However, the exact price of ZTE open continues to be a mystery for now.

There have plenty of reports in the past that had indicated ZTE will be unveiling a smartphone running on Firefox OS. Earlier speculations touted that this smartphone may be dubbed the ZTE Mozilla rather than ZTE Open.

As per the company, this handset will start retailing in Latin America and Europe starting June 2013.

"ZTE continues to push the boundaries with the aim of bringing customers the very latest that mobile technology has to offer." said He Shiyou, ZTE EVP and Head of the Mobile Devices Division.

"ZTE has moved very quickly and has worked closely with us to develop a robust Mozilla Firefox OS smartphone," said Brendan Eich, Co-founder and CTO of Mozilla. "Firefox OS brings powerful open Web technologies to the smartphone market, giving users more choice and more options that reflect their lifestyle."

After ZTE, the other smartphone makers such as LG, Huawei and Sony have also indicated that they are eager to launch smartphones based on Firefox OS and will be joining the league soon. Samsung on the other hand, has denied looking at this space for now.

The Chinese smartphone maker has also unveiled a 5.7-inch display Grand Memo phablet, which comes with Android 4.1.2 on-board. Measuring 8.3mm, the ZTE Grand Memo packs in 3,200mAh battery. It sports a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.
