GSM Operators Add 5.54 Million Subscribers in August: COAI

GSM-based telecom players added 5.54 million subscribers in August to take the total user base to 749.9 million, the industry body Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said on Friday.

The GSM subscriber base stood at 744.4 million at the end of July 2014, it added.

COAI, which represents telecom players like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular, said the data does not include GSM subscriber number of Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices. Reliance Jio Infocomm had also joined the body.

Idea Cellular added the maximum number of users in August with 1.72 million subscribers joining its network. The user base of the operator increased to 141.8 million at the end of August with 18.91 percent market share.

Vodafone added 1.22 million subscribers to its network to take its base to 172.4 million at the end of the month. Its market share stood at 23 percent during the reported period.

Market leader Bharti Airtel added 0.77 million users and its user base has increased to 210.5 million at the end of August. Airtel has a market share of 28.07 percent.

Aircel added 0.91 million users to take its base to 74.8 million whereas Uninor added 0.71 million subscribers and its base stood at 40.8 million at the end of August.

Videocon added 0.2 million subscribers to increase its base to 5.83 million and state-run MTNL added 10,017 users to take its base to 3.29 million.
