In a bid to keep up with the Samsung Gear 2 and the Pebble, Sony has updated the SmartWatch 2 SW2 app for Android devices on Tuesday. The update adds a vital new feature - a watchface editor that lets users customize the SmartWatch 2 watchface to their liking with clock styles, and widgets like weather, notification and battery life, instead of the plain old date and time.

Additionally, using the SmartWatch 2 SW2 application, users can add custom wallpapers to spruce up the home screen to add some life into the otherwise all black background. Post the update, apps installed on the phone can be installed, enabled, and disabled right from the watch itself using the advanced settings mode on the Smart Connect app. Sony also adds a built-in calculator.

The updated SmartWatch 2 SW2 app is available to download from Google Play immediately. Early user reviews on the store seem to be generally in favour of the update.

The SmartWatch 2 is available in India for a price of Rs. 14,990 which is a much lower than the asking price of the Samsung Galaxy Gear at launch. However, Samsung had dropped the price of the Galaxy Gear to Rs. 15,290 in February.

Notably, Sony has not launched any new smartwatches in 2014, while Samsung has launched three new smartwatches - the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit - which were launched in India in April. The Samsung Gear Fit and Gear 2 Neo are listed carrying an identical price tag of Rs. 15,450, while the Gear 2 has been listed at Rs. 21,550.
