WeChat on Monday announced the roll out of v6.0 of its app for Android and iOS, bringing a new video capture and sharing feature called Sight apart from a new optimised interface for iOS 8.

The Sight feature in WeChat 6.0 for Android and iOS lets users capture a 6-second video clip and share it with their contracts through the Moments visual social feed or chat. Users have to pull down the main WeChat chats tab to view the Sight screen, or tap the "+" button and then select the Sight button to begin.

Once on the Sight page in the WeChat 6.0 app, users can press and hold the video camera icon to record, and then release to choose sending options, from individual or group chats, to the Moments social feed.

WeChat notes that the Sight videos will automatically play when the logged-in user is connected on 3G or Wi-Fi. Of course, the similarity between the Sight feature and Twitter's Vine service have to be noted, with the latter also offering the ability to share 6-second video clips.

Apart from Sight, WeChat 6.0 adds visual enhancements, including a new sticker button for chats in Android, and a new tab bar for iOS. The updated app is listed on Google Play, and the App Store.

WeChat rival Facebook-owned WhatsApp recently announced it has over 600 million active users globally, of which 70 million are from India. Late last month, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum had announced a delay to the launch of the free voice calling feature on the popular cross-platform instant messaging service.

Koum had said the firm still has several technical issues to overcome before it can successfully launch seamless voice calling, noting issues like how WhatsApp doesn't have access to certain microphones on the smartphone to properly enable noise cancellation.
