WhatsApp, the popular cross-platform instant messaging service, now claims to handled 64 billion messages (sent and received) in a single day.

WhatsApp said on Twitter that its service has achieved a new daily record of handling about 20 billion outgoing messages and nearly 44 billion incoming messages in a single day (24 hours), which adds up to 64 billion.

WhatsApp's tweet reads, "new daily record: 20B messages sent (inbound) and 44B messages received (outbound) by our users = 64B messages handled in just 24 hours." It's worth pointing out that the shared daily message numbers do include the group messages as well.

Notably, the popular cross-platform instant messaging service has grown in terms of handling daily messages, as in January, WhatsApp claimed to be handling 50 billion daily messages on average.

WhatsApp has been growing rapidly and has been a leader in the mobile instant messaging service space. The messaging service reached 300 million monthly active user base in August 2013, and by the end of 2013, it reached 400 million monthly active users.

In February WhatsApp, soon after announcing its impending acquisition by Facebook, said that it would soon be offering a voice service. CEO Jan Koum announced that the voice service would be deployed for Android and iOS devices this spring, with Blackberry and Microsoft and Nokia phones coming later.

Earlier, WhatsApp refuted the media reports around the claim that the WhatsApp app for Android had its shortcomings in terms of the privacy of chat history. WhatsApp issued a statement which suggested that the claims were 'overstated' and 'not painted an accurate picture'.
