John Oliver once again brings to the platter a string of thoughtfully researched reports with a dash of fun and laughter — from politics, law, finance, medicine, social structure, crime, technology, and international relations.
Inevitably, the show dedicates a few episodes to the global pandemic; which has been going on for almost two years before the season airs.
On the social and political fronts topics covered range from unemployment to police raids, from misinformation among immigrant diaspora communities to pathetic working conditions in meat-packing facilities, from ransomware attacks to homelessness, and from ""stand your ground"" laws to and union-busting.
Like always, the medical front is given equal weight. Oliver brings to the light various facts related to emergency medical services, PFAS — a class of chemicals linked to an array of health issues, nursing homes and assisted living facilities for the elderly, and Health Care Sharing Ministries.
However, one of the most popular episodes from the season is the one that satirizes the city of Danbury in Connecticut — which started a friendly banter between Oliver and many content creators from the city, as well as the mayor.
The latter even jokingly announced to rename a sewer plant in the city as “John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant” — since “it’s full of crap, just like Oliver”. However, Oliver later offers $55,000 to local charities to rename the sewer in actuality.
