Sandra (Léa Seydoux) is a freelance translator, and single mother who is looking after her eight-year-old daughter Linn (Camille Leban Martins), and her father Georg Kienzler (Pascal Greggory), a retired philosophy professor who is suffering from neurodegenerative disease.
Sandra is bright, energetic, and utterly exhausted in her life. One day, she runs into her old friend Clément (Melvil Poupaud), a cosmochemist who has an adorable son, and fears about a marriage that is losing its spark. Sandra and Clément come closer and begin a passionate affair.
