19 Million Xbox One Consoles Sold Globally Till Date, Reveals Electronic Arts CFO

It's been known for some time that Microsoft has decided not to issue reports on the number of Xbox One consoles sold. Rather it has decided to divulge the number of active accounts on Windows 10 or Xbox Live. What this means is, you can never really know how many Xbox Ones have been sold the world over. Electronic Arts' (EA) CFO, Blake Jorgensen might just have changed that.

According to GamesIndustry, during an earnings call Jorgensen stated that the combined figure of current generation consoles sold is at 55 million units. Given that EA doesn't consider the PS Vita or Wii U as platforms worth supporting, and that Sony has openly said it has sold around 36 million PS4s, that puts the Xbox One install base at almost 19 million. It corroborates with long-time reporter on all things Microsoft, Mary Jo Foley's earlier statement of 18 million Xbox Ones sold on the Windows Weekly Podcast.

If accurate, this not only puts Microsoft at a massive handicap and it also makes Sony's remarkable comeback all the more tremendous. It also indicates that the Redmond-based company has never truly recovered from its poor received initial reveal of the console.

From an India standpoint, the console has been at a disadvantage from day one. Odd distribution decisions and expensive games despite some high profile marketing efforts make it a distant second choice compared to the PS4. While Microsoft India does not comment on units sold, industry sources peg it at around 10,000 Xbox Ones in the hands of consumers in the country (including parallel imports, which have a price advantage). In contrast the PS4 is slated to hit 100,000 sold by April in India. Tragic considering it's improved by leaps and bounds since its global release in 2013.
