  • Nintendo wants the Switch's life to go beyond the usual five years
  • It's betting big on peripherals to boost sales

As the Nintendo Switch completes its first year of being on sale this week, it appears that Nintendo has no plans to launch a Nintendo Switch 2 or an iterative version of the console anytime soon.

Sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal claim that the Kyoto-based company will hold off on variations in the Nintendo Switch hardware or 'Switch 2.0' as the publication calls it.

This comes after an investor briefing in February where Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima said he wanted the Switch’s lifecycle to be longer than the usual five to six years seen in the video game industry.

In addition to this, Nintendo expects to sell 17 million Nintendo Switch consoles by March 31 this year and pegs demand for peripherals that could expand its feature set to fuel growth.

Nintendo has been far from adverse when it comes to launching iterations on its existing hardware. We saw this with the Nintendo 3DS getting the New Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL as well as the 2DS and its XL variant.

Safe to say, Nintendo probably wants to see strong sales of the Switch for awhile before iterating on it. Though it doesn’t help matters that some third-party games are crippled by its lack of technical prowess.
