Red Dead Redemption 2 will release on two discs for PS4. According to leaked Japanese PS4 box art for the game, it will ship on two Blu-ray discs. This explains why Rockstar Games' support team was able to confirm that fans will be able to play Red Dead Redemption 2 from its disc without the need of an additional download. The Japanese Red Dead Redemption 2 box art was spotted on the PS4 subreddit (via Japanese sites Nariyukigame and Game's Talk.net). Other information that can be gleaned from the box art includes PlayStation Plus being necessary for Red Dead Online, multiplayer support for upto 32 players, the game being enhanced for PS4 Pro, and upto a 105GB file size on your PS4 HDD. This makes it the first game this generation to ship on two discs at launch. Re-releases of games such as Shadow of War, Gears of War 4, and Halo 5 have shipped on two discs, but the versions available on day one did not. What we aren't able to decipher is if a Rockstar Games Social Account is needed to play it in single-player.

As per an email from the developer's customer support team posted on popular gaming forum ResetEra, Red Dead Redemption 2 requires a one-time connection to the Internet for would be players to create or log into a Rockstar Games Social Club account. The Rockstar Games Social Club is, as the name suggests, a social network service (and digital rights management tool) for games from the developer such as GTA V, Max Payne 3, and now, Red Dead Redemption 2.

"I would like to inform you that you will be able to play on your PS4 Pro and reading your previous query, you will need one-time Internet connection while signing into Social Club to login to the game. Then only you will be able to move forward to gameplay session," an email from Rockstar Games' customer support reads.

While earlier Rockstar Games used Social Club, it wasn't mandatory. This time around this doesn't seem to be the case. Though it it will be interesting to see if Rockstar plans to address this outside of its support channels. Given that the service has had its fair share of hackers, perhaps Rockstar Games is confident of its security particularly with Red Dead Redemption 2 on the way.

The same ResetEra user also confirmed that that Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played on PS4 at least, without an extra download.

"We would like to inform you that you can keep the pre-order as Red Dead Redemption 2 will be fully functional and playable from the disc on PS4," an email from Rockstar Games' support team reads. It's unclear if this is the case with the Xbox One version of the game at the moment. Nonetheless, with it out on October 26 we'll know for sure soon enough.

Sony has listed the Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 download size as 89.20GB on the PS Store. Furthermore, the Red Dead Redemption 2 preload date is October 18 from 10am ET (7:30pm IST). This should give those who pre-ordered Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 and Xbox One around a week to download the game in time for its global release. For what it's worth, the Xbox One Red Dead Redemption 2 download size is 88.52GB.
