LG Display last week shared a roadmap for the future of its Plastic OLED displays, revealing that more flexible displays are coming from the company - new displays that will not just bend but will also be foldable.

The South Korean electronics manufacturer, which first used the Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display for its LG G Flex smartphone last year and recently launched the LG G Watch R with the same display technology, now intends to use it for upcoming flexible smartphones and tablets that may launch in 2015.

The company also wants to create 'Foldable' and 'Rollable' P-OLED screens for other electronic devices such as monitors, TV, automotive infotainment systems, and more by 2017.

"The Plastic OLED's potential is very promising. LG Display is devoting its energy and resources to respond quickly to fast growing market and consumers' needs in order to develop Plastic OLED to become the key OLED application technology in the future," notes LG Display Newsroom.

Plastic OLED as the name suggests is made out of plastic substrate. LG says that unlike LCD and glass OLED displays, Plastic OLED has simple structure, and is thinner and lighter. While glass displays are prone to breakage, Plastic OLED, which is film based, is flexible enough to be curved to a certain angle, and it does not break easily, according to LG's Display unit.

The company believes that P-OLED is valuable in terms of portability and durability as well, apart from its simple design and it "will play an important role in people's everyday lives in the future."
