  • It will be launched in two variants

Microsoft’s Surface Phone has been in the rumour mill for a long time, and recently, it was even reported that it may be a foldable phone if latest patents are to be believed. However, refuelling hopes, information on Microsoft’s mobile efforts has cropped up online giving us a fair idea on what the smartphone will bring, whenever it arrives.

The information has cropped up on Microsoft's official account on Bilibili, a Chinese, anime-themed YouTube-like video sharing service. This was first spotted by Twitter tipster Walking Cat, and it mentions that the Microsoft Surface Phone, will in fact be called Surface Mobile. Furthermore, the phone is expected to come in two variants codenamed Surface Peking and Surface Slavonia, and this could mean that internals of the variants may be different from each other, or even design.

It is also mentioned that the Surface Mobile will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor; however, the exact SoC is not mentioned. There have been reports of a Snapdragon 835 SoC, but some suggest that Microsoft may just go in for a mid-range 660 chipset as well. The Surface Mobile is also said to come with Surface Pen support, a first by Microsoft, and something that will be a USP if true. The device will obviously run on some version of Windows 10 Mobile, however, there are hints of a Win32 applications support as well, hinting at interesting developments there.

Lastly, but importantly, the leak suggests that the Microsoft Mobile will come with ‘on-table’ projection capabilities in Continuum mode. It however doesn’t detail how this will work, but it suggests that the smartphone will have a stand that will allow it to be propped up to 185 degrees. Furthermore, the projection capabilities will only last one hour, presumably due to high generation of heat or draining battery power. If not a stand, then the foldable abilities could allow the smartphone to project on a flat surface as well.

All of this information suggests that Microsoft has not given up on the Surface Mobile yet, although, a launch date doesn’t seem to be anywhere near.
