Samsung is gearing up to revamp its smartphone portfolio with the use of more premium materials, suggests a new report.

Samsung's mobile chief Shin Jong-Kyun while speaking at the company's annual shareholder meeting in Seoul has revealed plans to make more smartphones with metal casings and high-resolution displays alongside slim designs.

Bloomberg quotes Jong-Kyun, "Samsung Electronics aims to consolidate its leadership in the premium market and plans to newly change the smartphone lineup to strengthen competitiveness."

The move can be considered as an attempt to regain lost ground as Samsung reported its first drop in annual net profit in three years while Apple in contrast recorded its biggest ever profits with 74.5 million iPhone sales reported in fiscal first quarter ended December 27.

It's worth noting that lately Samsung has been focusing on the use of metal casings on its Galaxy range smartphones, seen clearly in the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The company's first smartphone to sport metal frames was the Samsung Galaxy Alpha launched last year. Buoyed by the response to its Galaxy Alpha, the company soon introduced the Galaxy A-series of smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy A3, Samsung Galaxy A5, and Samsung Galaxy A7.

A recent report even claimed that Samsung received around 20 million pre-orders for the flagship Samsung Galaxy S6 and dual-edge Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge from mobile carriers. Samsung was also reported to raise its production target for the new high-end Galaxy smartphones following positive market reception.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge has been confirmed to be available globally starting April 10.
