Microsoft Surface Mini to Feature Qualcomm SoC, Stylus Support: Report

Microsoft has already started sending invites that said, "Join us for a small gathering" for a May 20 event in New York, where the company is expected to announce the long-rumoured Surface Mini tablet.

Now, new details regarding the yet-to-be-launched Surface Mini have surfaced that claim the tablet will be powered by Qualcomm-based chipsets, instead of Nvidia Tegra SoCs, and will come with OneNote integration.

Bloomberg in a report citing sources familiar with the company's plans has claimed that the Redmond giant will also introduce, apart from the Surface Mini tablet, other new Surface models including the tablets powered by Intel chipsets at the May 20 event.

In addition, Paul Thurrott of Windows IT Pro reports that the rumoured Surface Mini tablet will come with stylus support and OneNote integration, which is Microsoft's note-taking software.

The report claims that the tablet will hit market shelves by late June and will be available with a click-in cover which will support multi-position kickstands. In addition, the report also speculates that the Surface Mini might bring new colour variations to the Surface line of tablets. Notably, Thurrott also notes that Microsoft can reveal another Surface device at the May 20 event.

ZDNet claims that the May 20 event will see CEO Satya Nadella officiating the launch.

The Microsoft Surface Mini is said to sport an 8-inch display, run Windows RT 8.1 and be based on an ARM chipset. We had recently reported about how an accessory manufacturer named Vostrostone (VSTN) had listed its smart cover and Bluetooth keyboard for an alleged Surface Mini 8-inch tablet on Amazon.

The rumoured Surface Mini tablet, if launched, will supplement the existing line up of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 Windows-powered tablets.
