Game of Thrones has always been a dark show, and as we lead into the big events of episode nine, (which we're honestly having difficulty waiting for) things just keep getting worse. The show is diverging sharply from the books at times, but the big events are staying true, and at least some of what's happening now in the show is firmly in 'A Dance with Dragons' territory, which was the latest and bleakest book in the series so far.

The latest episode, Mockingbird, also sets the stage for Tyrion's trial by combat, which was probably the most dramatic and exciting moment of the fourth book - at least until the events which set the fifth and latest book into motion! And while we have to wonder what's going to happen when the show inevitably overtakes the books, we wish that the script writers would bring a little humour into the narrative. The books might be bleak too, but once in a while you should be allowed to smile.

Thankfully, some people from the legions of fans of Game of Thrones do seem to agree with us, and they have been creating the most amazing works, such as this mashup video of what it would be like if the Game of Thrones took place in the Mushroom Kingdom instead of Westeros.

Created by YouTube user NickslposionFX, the video is brilliant, with an 8-bit style recreation of Game of Thrones iconic theme music, and locations such as the Vanilla Fortress, Ludwig's Castle and Yoshi's Island. The crowning moment was right at the end though, with the last screen bearing the text "Written by Shigero [sic] Miyamoto", where George R R Martin's name comes at the end.

What's even better (if that was possible!) is that the same YouTuber has also created a side-by side comparison video, so you can see the original HBO sequence, and the Mario version alongside each other. Enjoy!
