  • Ultimate Edition will be available starting June 28.
  • Batman solo flick is an “original story”, says Affleck.

The second chapter in Warner Bros' extended DC universe - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - didn't exactly have the kind of reaction the studio hoped it would, even if it did garner over $870 million worldwide. The film suffered from a terrible double disease of permanent brooding and poor storytelling, but that hasn't stopped the producers from deciding on releasing an extended cut alongside the home release.

Called the 'Ultimate Edition', the extended cut is not only R-rated (on account of more violence than the theatrical version) but also 30 minutes longer. Warner Bros released a trailer on Thursday evening, and part of the extra footage, it seems, includes a longer North African presence and the inclusion of Jena Malone's character - she's the one wearing black frames and addresses Lois Lane with "This is what makes you such a good reporter, that stuff like this still shocks you."

The additional half an hour means the film will now run for 3 hours, which might be a task for some to get through. Alternatively, it may well clear up some plot points, something fans might be looking forward to since release in March. It will be available digitally on June 28, and with the Blu-ray on July 19.

In other Batman news, Ben Affleck said that his solo Batman flick - which he will write, direct, and star in - will mostly be an "original story" as opposed to towing the canon line.

"I think what I would do is probably, I would probably do in some ways what Zack did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it," he told Cines Argentinos in an interview. "Because I wouldn't want the fans to already know the story and be familiar with it, but I would borrow, and steal, great things that have been done before in the comics."

The film doesn't have a set date for now, but judging by Warner Bros' DC schedule, it will either release on October 5, 2018 or November 1, 2019. Meanwhile, Affleck will also reprise his role in the two-part Justice League gala, out on November 17, 2017 and June 14, 2019.

If you're wondering how that stacks up with Marvel's own schedule, the two-part Avengers: Infinity War is slated for May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 - much closer than the year and a half gap for DC. That's obviously down to the other films the two have planned for their separate universes; two in Marvel's case and four for DC Comics.
