Facebook on Tuesday announced global availability of free video calling in its Messenger app. The feature was initially announced at the end of April in select markets.

Announcing the news via a Facebook post, David Marcus, Vice President of Messaging Products at Facebook, said, "We're happy to share we've now rolled out the capability globally, with the exception of a few countries we're still working on improving quality for." Unfortunately, Marcus hasn't revealed the list of countries receiving the feature.

Facebook's Messenger app, which has over 600 million users, after the rollout of the video calling feature, will get a video icon at the top right corner of the chat screen. The video calling feature will be rolled out in a Messenger app update for Android and iOS.

It's worth noting that the Messenger update has not reached Google Play India yet and the listing is showing May 15 as the last update for the app.

With the global rollout of the video calling feature, Facebook's Messenger will be competing against some heavyweights such as Microsoft's Skype, Apple's FaceTime, and Google's Hangouts - all of which offer video calling on their apps.

In April, Messenger video calling was rolled out to 18 countries, namely Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay.

Facebook's standalone Messenger app is expected to get major revamp with a number of features currently being tested including sending money to friends via the Messenger mobile app; also in testing is the voice transcription feature, which will enable users to send voice clips with automatically typed-out text. A recent report even claimed that the Messenger app might soon let users play games in the app itself.
