Susan (Lesley Manville) is caught off guard when one of the crime novelists (Conleth Hill) that she edits for, dies mysteriously.
She decides to wrap up the unfinished manuscript of his last book, which revolves around a brilliant private detective in the 1950s called Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan), who easily cracks seemingly impossible cases.
As the project furthers, she finds shocking similarities between the book’s characters and people from the dead author’s life. Naturally, the congruence gets her to suspect that the clues to his murder lie within the book, and she begins her own investigation without further ado.
The crime drama is an adaptation of the 2016 mystery novel of the same name by British author Anthony Horowitz — who has also written for the show. The six-part series follows a mystery-within-a-mystery format and focuses more on contemporary times, unlike the book.
“In the book, the mysteries happen one at a time whereas in the show, I wanted to do them simultaneously and that gave me the opportunity to do things that have never been done before. These two time periods are able to co-exist and the viewer can step from one to another in the blink of an eye,” says Horowitz.
