Is Need for Speed Arena the Name of the Next Need for Speed Game?

While FIFA and Battlefield may be publisher EA’s biggest money spinners, it hasn’t forgotten one of its oldest franchises, Need for Speed. And it seems that we might have a new one on the way.

The company has filed for a trademark registration with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for a game that will be titled Need for Speed Arena.

The application page describes it as “computer game software”, “downloadable computer game software”, and “video game software”. In addition to this, it’s also an “on-line computer game” as one of the services the trademark is registered for.

While no other details are available at the moment, more should be revealed when the trademark application is approved.

The name, Need for Speed Arena, alludes to a host of possibilities. It could be a free-to-play mobile game, or perhaps a sequel to 2015’s poorly received Need for Speed. Some suggest it could be an “e-sports tie-in with the racing series.

Earlier in the year, Ghost Games - developer of Need for Speed confirmed a new game was in the works.

"We are now building upon the foundations that have been laid with Need for Speed and delivering our next game in 2017," a post on the official Need for Speed website reads.

Given the response to Need for Speed, we're surprised a new game in the series is in the works. It seems that publisher EA considered it enough of a success to warrant another entry. We hope though that Ghost Games allows offline play as playing the game online wasn't as smooth or seamless as anyone would have hoped.
