Highlights
  • Sony's upgraded PS4 (codenamed PS4 Neo) is expected between June and October.
  • The source of this release window is French video game distributor Innelec Multimedia.
  • Expect more information at E3 2016.

According to French video game distributor Innelec Multimedia, Sony's upgraded PS4 (codenamed PS4 Neo or PS4K as it's known among developers), is available at retail by October.

This latest piece of information comes via the company's earnings results and was mentioned in a press release. At the time of writing this, Innelec's website doesn't seem to have its press release available right now, though it has been uploaded on French site Otaxou, which also claims that anticipated Sony first-party exclusive The Last Guardian could see an October release as well.

Innelec claims the PS4 Neo will be available between June and October of this year. It's dubbed as an "evolution" of the PS4 console "with new features."

The October release for PS4 Neo makes sense when you consider that gaming site Giantbomb reported that from October every PS4 game needs to have two separate operating modes.

"Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a 'Base Mode' which will run on the currently available PS4 and a 'Neo Mode' for use on the new console," a post on Giantbomb read.

If true, this means that we will no longer be subject to games which were below 1080p on the PS4 such as Star Wars Battlefront and Watch Dogs. All games on the PS4K would be at least full HD.

With E3 2016 less than a month away, and Gamescom as well as Tokyo Game Show to follow, it will be interesting to see what Sony unveil in the run up to October.
