  • Dual 4G VoLTE solution allows both SIM cards to support 4G VoLTE
  • MT2625 SoC is meant for cost-sensitive IoT devices
  • Helio X30 is the first chipset to support Dual 4G VoLTE solution

MediaTek on Tuesday introduced its 'Dual 4G VoLTE' solution in collaboration with China Mobile. This solution allows dual-SIM smartphones to support 4G VoLTE with both SIM cards instead of just providing support to the primary SIM card. Separately, the company also launched its first narrow band Internet of Things Sytem-on-Chip (SoC).

While most dual-SIM smartphones only provide 4G VoLTE support on the primary SIM card, the new Dual 4G VoLTE solution from MediaTek provides the support to both primary and secondary SIM cards. The company's Helio X30 SoC, which was launched last year, is the "industry's first chipset to complete the interoperability test of dual 4G VoLTE on the China Mobile network," the company said in its release.

MediaTek says that its new solution will maximise the usability of dual VoLTE with stable calling quality and high data transfer rates, allowing users to get better Internet and calling experiences.

Moving to the narrow band IoT SoC, MediaTek launched its first narrow band IoT SoC - the MT2625. The company says that it has managed to build the world's smallest NB-IoT module (16x18mm) around the chipset, again in collaboration with China Mobile.

"MediaTek's new ultra-low-power MT2625 SoC supports a full frequency band (from 450MHz to 2.1GHz) of 3GPP R13 (NB1) and R14 (NB2) standards for a wide range of IoT applications including smart home control, logistics tracking, and smart meters," MediaTek said in a separate release.

The company says that MT2625 SoC is an NB-IoT chipset that has been built to meet the requirements of cost-sensitive and small IoT devices. The MT2625 chipset comes with an ARM Cortex-M microcontroller (MCU), pseudo-static RAM (PSRAM), flash memory, and power management unit (PMU). "The chip leverages MediaTek's advanced power consumption technology to enable IoT devices to work with chargeable batteries for years," the company said.
