Qualcomm Launches Gobi 9x45 LTE Modem With Download Speeds Up to 450Mbps

Qualcomm has announced its fifth-generation LTE solution called the Gobi 9x45 modem, alongside the second-generation Qualcomm RF360 envelope tracker, the QFE3100.

The chipmaker says that the new Qualcomm Gobi 9x45 modem and QFE3100 are currently sampling with customers and are expected to be commercially available in 2015. The company touts that the Gobi 9x45 modem as the "first announced Category 10 LTE cellular modem." It comes with download speeds of up to 450Mbps and upload speeds of up to 100Mbps across the TDD and FDD spectrum.

The Gobi 9x45 modem is based on second-generation 20nm technology node and supports up to 60MHz (downlink) and up to 40MHz 2x CA in the uplink. It integrates major cellular standards such as DC-HSPA, EVDO, CDMA 1x, GSM and TD-SCDMA, while also supports major RF bands and band combinations. The modem also comes with global position support including GPS, Beidou, Glonass and Galileo. There is integrated support for LTE Broadcast, VoLTE and LTE Dual-SIM too.

The Qualcomm QFE3100, on the other hand, is said to be optimised for "30 percent smaller board area and enhanced power efficiency as compared to the previous generation. This next-generation envelope tracker is designed to enable sleeker designs and improved battery life by reducing power amplifier (PA) power consumption and heat generation."

Commenting on the announcement of the new products, Cristiano Amon, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, and Co-President, QCT said, "The expansion of our connectivity solutions to include fifth-generation LTE Category 10 technology, and the QFE3100, will offer consumers more efficient mobile devices that connect seamlessly to the fastest LTE Advanced networks while consuming lower power. Today's announcement builds on our established technology leadership in the LTE connectivity space and demonstrates our continued commitment to offering users an outstanding and unparalleled mobile experience."
