  • Gmail now lets mobile users turn off 'Conversation view'
  • The new update is available for Android and iOS devices
  • It will be rolled out globally over the next 15 days

If you've turned off the Conversation view on the Web, you won't see email threads on mobile devices.

Gmail for Android and iOS has now received the option to turn off 'Conversation view', in which multiple emails are combined under one thread. You don't need to wait for an update to the Gmail app on your Android or iOS device to get the new experience since the update is rolling out gradually through a server-side update. This will be available to all users globally over the next 15 days. Notably, Gmail on the Web already offers an option to disable Conversation view. This mainly helps to find an attachment from an email conversation as you don't need to go through the entire conversational thread to see which of the emails included the required attachment. Grouped emails however help shorten the list of new emails if multiple emails are being delivered under the same subject.

"In Gmail, replies to emails are grouped together as 'conversations,' to make them easier to digest and follow," the G Suite team writes in a blog post while announcing the new Gmail update. "Some users, however, prefer to see each of their emails listed individually in their inbox. This is possible on the Web by toggling 'Conversation view' off in the Settings menu. We're now bringing this same feature to the Gmail Android and iOS apps."

Users who have already turned off the Conversation view on the Web will wont see email threads on their Gmail apps as well. Alternatively, you can disable grouped emails by unticking the Conversation view option after getting into Settings > General settings.

While Google has confirmed that the update will gradually roll out to all users over the next 15 days, you are recommended to install the latest Gmail app version on your Android and iOS devices to make the Conversation view optional. We were able to spot the change on our Android and iOS devices.
