Google earlier this month introduced the Insert from Drive feature to the Gmail for Android app, letting users directly share their Drive files in emails. Back in May it had launched the Save to Drive option for the Gmail for Android app. Come Thursday however, Google has announced that it was bringing the same features to the iOS platform for iPhone and iPad users.

In a post on the official Gmail blog, software engineer Simon Forsyth explains the update, saying, "Just like with Gmail on the web, you can now insert files from Google Drive directly into an email on your phone or tablet. The apps will even tell you if your file isn't shared with the person you're sending it to so you can change the sharing settings before you send it. And to help you store all your files in a single place, if someone sends you an email attachment, you can save it directly to Drive with one tap."

As Forsyth details, if sharing a Drive file with someone who doesn't have shared access to the file, users will be notified to change the settings regarding the same. In addition, if users have multiple Gmail accounts they can choose which signed-in accounts can be made visible on the app. A new feature seems also added to have been added as a bonus to the Gmail for iOS app, allows users to change their profile picture directly from the settings. The update, version 3.14159, is available on the Apple App Store, and was listed on Thursday. It is available for devices running iOS 6.0 or higher.

The Gmail app can also be downloaded on the Google Play store. The version released for Google Play also contains an improved autocomplete feature, where users will get better suggestions for the 'To', 'Cc' and the 'Bcc' fields quickly. Also included is improved formatting support when restoring saved drafts. It also has several bug fixes and reliability improvements bundled along. This update was released on July 16 on Google Play in India and is available for users running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above.
