Skype, the popular VoIP, video-chatting, and messaging software from Microsoft, has been updated for the Windows 8.1 operating system, with its new v2.6 release.

The new 'Skype for modern Windows' or Windows 8.1 focuses on a better integration and synchronisation across varied devices, and fluent picking up of calls.

With the latest update of Skype for Windows 8.1, users won't be facing the 'ringing even after picking up the call' problem, as the incoming ring will now stop much faster. Additionally it has been mentioned that "Skype calls will sync up wherever you choose to take the call from," whether it is via the Outlook account, mobile app, desktop or tablet. Picked up calls will also sync automatically across devices.

The update also includes a revamped messaging experience. Skype, describing the enhanced chat features, said on its blog post, "As we mentioned in our enhanced chat blog, your chat history and read messages also sync automatically across devices. This way, wherever you are, you can continue the conversation you started. You can also send an IM while someone is offline and they will receive it the next time they sign in."

Last week, Skype for Outlook.com was updated globally, letting users video chat from anywhere around the globe via their Outlook accounts. The project, which started as a preview version last year, needs no separate Skype installation but a simple plug-in download.

The Skype team has also made some improvements to the Skype for Outlook.com service, including HD video calling support for PC users, provided both the users have HD compatible webcams installed. An issue related to calls still ringing after being picked-up, has also been resolved. The latest feature also supports Mac systems with its own Safari plugin.
