HBO has renewed Westworld for a third season, it announced on Tuesday, just two episodes into the second season. The sci-fi Western show, created by husband-wife duo Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, is based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name. It's set in a futuristic theme park where guests can do whatever they please with android hosts without fear of retaliation, and slowly builds towards a robot uprising against the humans.

Westworld drew HBO's best numbers for a show in its first season when it premiered in late 2016, and the series' complex plot structure and storytelling drove conversation on the Internet, with fans working fervently to deduce the mysteries before the writers revealed them on screen. After a gap of sixteen months, Westworld returned in April with its second season, which will go on for next couple of months.

Westworld Season 2: A Real, Violent Delight

In our review of season two, this critic said Westworld is an engaging watch thanks to its terrific cast, which includes the likes of Jeffrey Wright, Evan Rachel Wood, and Thandie Newton, even when it produces multiple over-an-hour long episodes that don't always feature the main trio.

For HBO, the show gains even more importance with Game of Thrones close to its end. Of course, the network isn't resting on its laurels, having put five Thrones spin-offs in development, of which it might greenlight more than one. But in the meantime, Westworld will become its drama torch-bearer, alongside critical darlings Big Little Lies and The Deuce.
