Highlights
  • The Nintendo Switch is releasing in March with a number of great games
  • Ghost Recon Wildlands looks like an interesting open-world game
  • Nier: Automata is a truly unique action-RPG

March is traditionally not the best month of gaming, but that has been changing since the last couple of years. We have some great remasters, original IPs, sequels and even a console launch to kick off the month. So after cutting down the clutter, this is what we look forward to in the coming month.

Nintendo Switch
Let’s address the elephant in the room first. Nintendo Switch will finally hit retail around the world… well almost everywhere. India doesn’t have an official distributor for Nintendo’s latest crossover console yet, so if you’re India, you’re going to have to rely on your international connections, or the local grey market for the console. But once you get your hands on it, you do have a lot of exciting games to look forward to. Here's the list of Nintendo Switch launch titles:

And of course saving the best for the last:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
While originally planned for the ill-fated Nintendo Wii U, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will go down in history as the first Triple-A title on the Nintendo Switch. With four years of development, a very ambitious open-world design, and high production values, Breath of the Wild promises to be the complete RPG experience that fans have been craving for a very long time. Will Nintendo finally have a Zelda that can appeal to an audience outside of Nintendo’s fan-base? We’ll know soon enough. Oh, and the Wii U version is releasing the same day too.

Mass Effect Andromeda
It’s been anticipated for years now, and finally we’re close to the release of a new episode in the Mass Effect series. Despite its fresh story and characters, Mass Effect Andromeda still has the familiar gameplay mechanics including Bioware’s signature conversation wheel. That said, the series-defining morality meter is now gone so you make more realistic decisions that define your character, rather than just a Paragon/ Renegade system of the past. The plot’s interesting as well, with humanity’s plans to populate other worlds, guiding the player to explore options in the Andromeda galaxy. Be prepared to lose a lot of hours in this one.

Releasing on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Mass Effect Andromeda release date: March 21 in the US, March 23 in India and Europe.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands
Ubisoft claims that Ghost Recon Wildlands has one of the biggest open worlds they have ever published. That’s an impressive claim coming from the publishers of Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry series of games. The Ghost Recon series has generally been better known as tactical shooters, but of late they’ve been a lot more accessible to action gamers as well. Wildlands is set in current times, so you have an arsenal of weapons that are grounded in reality. There’s a lot to do in the game as you take down Santa Blanca, a Mexican Drug Cartel. There are missions that you can complete in a variety of ways including stealth, or direct combat, or even as a sniper. It’s up to you. The best part is that it supports up to four players co-operative multiplayer.

Releasing on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Nier: Automata
From the developers responsible for some of the wildest Japanese action games in recent times, including Bayonetta, Vanquish, and MadWorld, comes a new action-RPG that’s like nothing you’ve played before. With fast-paced action and changing perspectives, Nier promises that same high-energy arcade gaming thrills with a bit of RPG-Style character growth and equipment upgrades thrown in as well.

Releasing on: PS4, PC

Nier: Automata release date: March 10, at the time of writing this publisher Square Enix has not confirmed a PC release date.

Other games releasing in March
Danganronpa 1-2 Reload
After getting crtical acclaim on the PlayStation Vita, Danganronpa will now come to the PS4 as well. With a sadistic whodunit plot based inside a school setting, Danganronpa is a visual novel that’s a treat for anyone who loves games for their narrations and puzzles.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix + 2.5 Remix
No, you’re not getting Kingdom Hearts 3 just yet. Instead you’ll have to make do with just another iteration of the story that’s been told multiple times before in other Kingdom Hearts games over the last 15 years. Jaded as we may sound, if you haven’t played Kingdom Hearts before, this unique combination of Square’s Japanese RPG with Disney characters is an excellent merger of two very different worlds, working in harmony.
