Microsoft announced it shipped 2 million units of its Xbox gaming consoles in the first quarter of 2014, out of which 1.2 million were the latest Xbox One consoles.

The information comes from the Redmond-based tech firm's quarterly earnings report, via Gamespot. The report gives out the numbers shipped to retailers, not the actual number of sold units.

Microsoft last week said it had shipped over 5 million Xbox One video game consoles to retailers since its launch in November. The console went on sale on November 22 in 13 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, a week before rival Sony's PlayStation 4 was released. To fire up sales, Microsoft last month began offering a $450 bundle that included the console and the exclusive shooter game "Titanfall" from Electronic Arts Inc.

The rival firm, Sony said on Wednesday it sold more than 7 million PlayStation 4 videogame consoles in just over four months till April 6, twice the number the older version, PlayStation 3, sold in the same time frame after its launch.

The $399 PlayStation 4 went on sale on November 29 in the United States, Western Europe and Latin America.

Last month, Microsoft announced the next-phase of roll-out for its Xbox One console. Starting September 2014, 26 new markets will get retail availability of the Xbox One console, including India. For now, pricing details and exact launch dates have not been disclosed.

Making the announcement on the official Xbox blog in March, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi said, "It's time to ensure even more fans around the world can enjoy Xbox One. So today we're proud to share that it will be available in 26 additional markets in September this year. We'll have much more to share at a local level towards the end of April, so stay tuned."
