One of the reasons for Minecraft's long-standing popularity on PC is its seemingly endless customisation in the form of user generated content or mods as they're known. So much so, that we've seen additions from a Sonic the Hedgehog mini-game and The Lord of the Rings' Mines of Moria to even allowing you to make video calls. It seems that this flexibility will be brought to the mobile and console versions of the game as well as its Windows 10 edition which suffers from similar concerns.

Jens Bergensten, lead developer on Minecraft, said in conversation with CNET that Microsoft is adding programmable items called command blocks to the mobile and Windows 10 versions.

"Modding is a core element of the Minecraft community," Bergensten said. "In order to support mods for other platforms, we need to create a system that allows this without modifying the application itself. We are currently researching our options and hope to solve this soon."

This bodes well for existing mods, some of which span entire fantasy realms such as WesterosCraft, which brings Game of Thrones to the game.

"Usually what is the most time consuming is to adapt the user interface for touch and gamepad, especially considering it's a bit more cumbersome to type text," Bergensten said. "Our ambition is to reach feature parity as soon as possible including command blocks," he added.

For those playing Minecraft on platforms that aren't PC, this is a welcome move. For Microsoft it allows players to spend more time on the game over and above its existing game modes instead of moving on to something else. How it is implemented though, remains to be seen.
