Highlights
  • The Nintendo Switch may have a USB Type-C port
  • This could be the first Nintendo handheld to use non-proprietary charging
  • The Nintendo Switch is out in March 2017

The Nintendo Switch may not have an exact price or release date yet, but that hasn’t stopped EB Games Australia from listing accessories for the console. One such accessory is a USB C charging cable for the device under the @play brand. “USB-A to USB-C Charging Cable compatible with the Nintendo Switch Console,” the description on EB Games’ site reads.

This implies that the Nintendo Switch would be using USB Type C for charging and could possible sport a USB Type C port. If so, this means that Nintendo is embracing a common standard that other tech companies such as Apple with the MacBook and MacBook Pro, and Google with the Pixel and Pixel XL have already embraced. A first for a company that relied on proprietary formats for its handhelds.

According to Nvidia, the Nintendo Switch’s Tegra solution has a "high-efficiency scalable processor includes an Nvidia GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards." The idea, according to the company, is to allow blistering fast to the mainstream, building NVN - a new API to make this possible, along with a new physics engine, advanced game tools, and libraries to boot.

Though nothing has been said of its raw performance numbers, its developer kits allegedly sport the following specifications:

  • Four ARM Cortex-A57 cores, max 2GHz
  • Nvidia second-generation Maxwell architecture
  • 256 CUDA cores, max 1GHz, 1024 FLOPS/cycle
  • 4GB RAM (25.6 GB/s, VRAM shared)
  • 32 GB storage (Max transfer 400 MB/s)
  • USB 2.0 and 3.0
  • 1280 x 720 6.2-inch IPS LCD
  • 1080p at 60 fps or 4k at 30 fps max video output
  • Capacitance method, 10-point multi-touch

It will be interesting to see how close the retail unit is to its developer kit. Earlier, we reported that the Nintendo Switch would be priced from $249 (around Rs. 17,000) onwards. It appears that this will be the case. UK-based retailer Gameseek has the console listed for £198.50. This puts it in line with the anticipated pricing outed by LetsPlayVideoGames’ Laura Kate Dale.

“UK specialist gaming retail chain GAME has been informed of the Nintendo Switch’s wholesale price to retailers, and is planning on selling their basic SKU (stock keeping unit) of the system in stores for £199.99,” a post on LetsPlayVideoGames read at the time. “We have also learned that a separate SKU featuring more internal storage and a packed in game is planned to sell at £249.99.” This will, if Nintendo’s plans bear fruition, result in a dollar pricing of $249.99 (approximately Rs. 17,000) and $299.99 (around Rs. 20,250) respectively.
