August AI, after outperforming OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google's MedPaLM AI models, has now cleared the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Post Graduation (NEET PG) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Postgraduate (AIIMS PG) exams in India. The Indian AI, developed by medical AI startup Beyond, has been helping users with health consultations.

Bengaluru-based Beyond's CEO and co-founder Anuruddh Mishra has vouched for the AI's medical knowledge. Powered by a combination of large language models, August AI can hold human-like conversations. AI is increasingly proving its worth in the healthcare field, aiding in diagnosis of major diseases.

IIT Madras, Ericsson Tie Up for Responsible AI Research

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has partnered up with Ericsson for joint research on responsible AI. The school's Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) and the firm have signed a five-year agreement. As part of the agreement, Ericsson Research will support and take part in CeRAI's research activities.

Ericsson also took part in a symposium on responsible AI held at IIT Madras. The institute said in a statement that AI research was crucial to Ericsson as 6G networks would be driven by AI algorithms.

Microsoft Windows 11 Gets AI-powered Update

Windows 11 operating system is getting a major update that will bring AI-powered tools to its services. Microsoft is rolling out the next Windows 11 update, which includes an AI Copilot for Windows, AI-powered Paint, Photos, and Snipping Tool. The Windows File Explorer also receives a new coat of paint in the update.

The Windows Copilot will add a sidebar on the home screen, which will let users change PC settings, launch apps, or answer questions like Bing chat. The feature will work like an AI assistant. The new Paint Cocreator will generate images and artwork in specific styles based on text prompts. The feature will roll out to all users in the coming weeks.

SAP Launches Generative AI Assistant Joule

SAP has announced its own generative AI assistant, Joule. This AI copilot will be embedded throughout SAP's cloud enterprise portfolio, helping businesses get work done faster. “With almost 300 million enterprise users around the world working regularly with cloud solutions from SAP, Joule has the power to redefine the way businesses – and the people who power them – work,” SAP CEO Christian Klein said.

SAP claims that Joule will be embedded into SAP applications from HR to finance, and across all its verticals, including supply chain and customer experience. Employees can ask a question or frame a query in plain language to receive insightful replies from Joule, which taps into SAP's data.

Hollywood Writers Union Ends Strike, Gets Protection from AI

The Hollywood writers union has agreed to end its five-month strike after it reached a deal with major studios over pay increases and increased protection from AI. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) voted to end the strike, allowing picketing members to return to work.

In addition to demand for higher pay, the guild had also sought assurances and protections against the use of AI in the industry. Hollywood studios have been looking at the possibility of integrating AI into their processes across different aspects of filmmaking. Most recently, the title credits sequence for Marvel's Secret Invasion TV show was made by AI.

Jony Ive, Sam Altman Developing an AI Gadget Together

Former Apple design chief, Jony Ive, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are developing an AI gadget together. The two are reportedly exploring the possibility of collaborating on making an AI-powered hardware device. These are early stages and there is no clarity on what the device could be, or if the two will actually build a gadget together.

With the recent boom in AI, companies have raced to integrate AI into their products. However, we are yet to see an AI-powered consumer facing device built from the ground up. Amazon recently launched its AI-powered Alexa device that can talk to users in a natural manner.
