As promised at the Jelly Bean launch event, Google has released the source code of Android 4.1 earlier today. Developers and advanced users can now get it from Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

Jean-Baptiste Queru from Android team has stated in the official Android building group that company has also released "proprietary binaries" for the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Nexus, and that for "Nexus S and Motorola Xoom will follow."

The availability of Jelly Bean source code is significant because manufacturers can now start working on this version of Android for their upcoming devices, or on updates for existing ones.

This source code will also be used by multiple custom firmware providers like CyanogenMOD and MIUI to prepare the next version of their firmware. CM team has already announced that they will soon start working on CM10, while the plans for CM9 are right on track.
