Apple is widely expected to compete in the large-screen smartphone segment with the launch of the iPhone 6, and its rumoured two screen size variants - 5.5-inch and 4.7-inch.

Now, a new report claims that the Cupertino-based company is testing a higher screen resolution on at least one of the two iPhone models likely to debut this year. 9to5Mac reports, citing sources familiar with the testing of the iPhone model, that the next generation handset will come with a pixel-tripling (3X) mode.

However, the report does not reveal which of the two rumoured iPhone models (4.7-inch and 5.5-inch) will sport the new sharper resolution. The report suggests that one of the alleged iPhone 6 models will come with a 960x1704 pixels resolution screen, compared to 640x1136 pixels resolution found on the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s - which all sport 4-inch displays.

Further, the report claims that this would also result in an increased pixel density of 416ppi on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model, while the 5.5-inch variant is said to come with 356ppi. If this comes out to be true, the alleged iPhone 6 models will have more pixel density than their predecessors. This can be seen as Apple's answer to the full-HD resolution trend in the current-generation of Android flagship smartphones.

The report also suggests that the core user-interface elements of iOS, such as its home screen, notification centre, and settings panels, will appear on the rumoured iPhone 6 as a visually-extended version of the functions on the current generation iPhone models. However, the sources claim that the company and Apple might optimise some apps to fit on the larger screen of the new iPhone.

Recent reports suggested that the alleged iPhone 6 with 5.5-inch display has been delayed due to battery cell supply constraints. Due to use of costly sapphire as a display material, the alleged iPhone 6 with 5.5-inch display is said to have limited production.

Reports have also emerged claiming that Apple might unveil the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model in August, while the 5.5-inch variant will follow latter.

The much-awaited new iPhone from Apple, expected to be called the iPhone 6, has also been making a number of online appearances thanks to some alleged dummy model leaks of the yet-to-be-announced handset.
