Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Mega series of smartphones with which the company hopes to "combine the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet". The company has unveiled two smartphone models under the series, Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 sports a 6.3-inch HD display, and features an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. It is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz. The Galaxy Mega has 1.5GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and A-GPS. The phone comes with a 3,200 mAh battery and runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It will come in 8 and 16GB internal storage capacity variants and will have a microSD card for expanding the memory up to 64GB.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a 5.8-inch screen with qHD(540x960 pixels) resolution. It is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, and features the same camera as that of Galaxy Mega 6.3. The phone will only have an 8GB internal storage variant. It comes with a 2,600mAh battery.

The GALAXY Mega smartphones will offer split screen capability for a variety of applications including email, messages, 'MyFiles,' 'S Memo,' 'S Planner', amongst others. The devices will also feature the much touted 'Air View' feature, that lets users preview information in emails, photos in Gallery, and speed dial contacts without opening them.

"We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more," said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Business, Samsung Electronics. "We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers' varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning GALAXY series."

The GALAXY Mega will be available globally beginning May starting with Europe and Russia, with pricing expected closer to launch. According to Samsung, a LTE-variant of the Galaxy 6.3 will be released as well. There's on word yet on when the phones will be launched in India or their pricing.

Some of the specifications of the two devices had already leaked on the Internet.
