While all major device makers are supposedly working on their own smart watch devices, Hon Hai Precision Industry, that uses the trade name Foxconn, has already demonstrated a new smart watch that can be connected with the iPhone.

It looks like the company's focus is on health tracking with the device. According to a report by Want China Times, the new smart watch can be connected wirelessly to the iPhone and allows users to get alerts for phone calls and Facebook updates in addition to measuring their respiration and heartbeat. The watch was showcased at the company's shareholders' meeting.

The report also quotes Terry Gou, Chairman of  Hon Hai saying that the company's wireless communications and medical research groups intend to add features like fingerprint scanning to the gadget for recording personal health data.

The report follows news of Qualcomm's plans to launch a self-branded smart watch called 'Zola'. The smart watch is said be released in September 2013.

As of now, there are no details available about the specifications of the Zola smart watch. However, it is likely to come with a Qualcomm's entry-level chips and Mirasol display.

Qualcomm had also showcased a mock up smart watch with Mirasol display at the 'SID display week' in Vancouver, earlier this year.

A fews days back, Sony had also officially launched SmartWatch 2, the successor to its SmartWatch. Sony SmartWatch 2 comes with a bigger 1.6-inch screen with higher resolution 220x176 pixels resolution, compared to the 1.3-inch screen 128x128 display on its predecessor. Sony is positioning the watch as a second-screen for your Android smartphones, letting users receive notifications from the phone as well as control its functionality.

SmartWatch 2 makes it possible to access notifications from the user's wrist such as messages, calls, email, Facebook or Twitter, Calendar, or use it as a remote for Walkman or other digital media players. The SmartWatch 2 comes with a bunch of pre-installed apps, with an option to load other apps as well.

The Japanese electronics giant fired the first salvo in what is expected to be the year of the smart watch, with companies like Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and LG, all said to be working on bringing their own smart watch-like devices to the market.
