London 2012 basketball is the third of its kind to make it to the list of Google doodles featured during the Olympics.

The first basketball related Google doodle was posted during the 2000 Olympics held at Sydney. The doodle depicted a kangaroo dribbling a basketball, moving towards a basket atop the L in the Google logo.

Basketball contests at the 2000 Olympic Games were held from September 16, 2000 to October 1, 2000. Games took place at the Sydney SuperDome and The Dome in Sydney, Australia. Favourites United States claimed the gold medals in both the men's and women's competitions. France and hosts Australia grabbed the silver in men's and women's competitions respectively, while Lithuanian men and Brazilian women picked up the bronze.

2008 Beijing Olympics basketball Google doodle depicted a dragon holding a basketball in its mouth. A mouse was also depicted as purportedly having throw the ball 'stolen' by the dragon. Or so it seems - feel free to make your own judgement by looking at the doodle!

Basketball contests at the 2008 Olympic Games were held from August 9, 2008 to August 24, 2008. Competitions were held at the Wukesong Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China. As expected, United States claimed the gold medals in both the men's and women's competitions. Spain and Australia grabbed the silver in men's and women's competitions respectively, while Argentina and Russia picked up the bronze in men's and women's category respectively.

It will be interesting to see what sport finds its place in Thursday's Google doodle.
